Not a rude question at all!
Hello, dear readers. Welcome to the corner of the web that I claim as my own. More specifically, welcome to Flickers in Time, my thoughts on moving pictures (and then some).
I don’t believe that the best answer to why….? is always why not! There are plenty of whys that deserve longer, better answers. Why do movies still matter when TV shows can give you all that, and more? Why should we pay even a little attention to Oscar and Emmy winners, when they seldom reflect the taste and ideas of their moment? Why do we still watch true crime and SNL, despite their respective problems? Why does representation matter, and why does it not mean slotting in a black actor or a queer writer and calling it a day? Why the sudden interest in adapting audio dramas into TV series?
Why write what no one might read?
I’m going to take a guess that if you’re reading this, you find those whys as interesting as I do. You really like the way carefully-crafted stories make us think and feel and argue and revisit our own memories and relationships. You’re the person who looks up trivia and hot takes after watching something that won’t leave your imagination alone. You probably watch things more than once, for more than one reason. And look, you’re not doing this for a living, but the excitement and vulnerability that comes with sharing your personal thoughts on the media that moves you is worth the time it takes to write it all down.
Also, it’s a fun challenge, and I miss writing!
So here we are at Flickers in Time. Some of these pieces are reworked writings from my time at Tufts. Most of them will be more recent than that. Is there something I MUST SEE if I’m going to have the audacity to start a blog? Let a girl know.
Thank you for being here.
